Marie Key, born Marie Key Kristiansen on October 7, 1979, in Copenhagen, Denmark, is a distinguished pop singer-songwriter known for her emotive vocals and insightful lyrics. She began her musical journey as the lead singer and songwriter for the folk-pop group Marie Key Band, which released two albums: Udtales [‘kæj] (2006) and Hver sin vej (2008).
Embarking on a solo career in 2011, Marie Key released her debut album I byen igen, featuring the hit single “Se nu herhen,” which achieved significant chart success in Denmark. Her follow-up album, De her dage (2012), reached number one on the Danish Album Charts and earned triple platinum certification. This album produced successful singles like “Uopnåelig” and “Uden forsvar,” the latter winning the Danish Music Award for Song of the Year.
In 2013, Marie Key collaborated with the Danish rock band Nephew on the single “Gå med dig,” which reached the top of the Danish charts. She also received the P3 Guld award and secured six Danish Music Awards, including Artist of the Year and Album of the Year.
Her subsequent albums, Tænker du vi danser (2015) and Giganter (2018), continued to showcase her evolving musical style, blending pop with electronic elements. In 2022, she released Lys finale, a collaborative project with the jazz duo Bremer/McCoy, highlighting her versatility as an artist.
Marie Key’s music is characterized by its blend of pop, electronic, and jazz influences, with lyrics that delve into themes of love, personal growth, and societal observations.
